With over 225 parks and recreation facilities in San Francisco, there are many opportunities for you to volunteer in your own neighborhood. Volunteer activities include gardening and ecological restoration, leading nature walks, coaching soccer, tutoring students in after school programs, working with seniors, office administration, theater production, etc. To read more about the Volunteer Program check out the Community Catalyst Newsletter.
About us:
The Volunteer Program strives to increase community involvement to enhance parks and recreation programs. The Volunteer Program recruits, trains, educates, manages, and recognizes volunteers. Volunteer in Recreation Centers:
All recreation volunteers must go through an application clearance process. This process takes approximately 7-10 business days before one is eligible to volunteer in this capacity. We encourage volunteers to commit 75 hours or more of service for recreation programming. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to maintain accurate volunteer service hours*. This procedure is reviewed at your orientation session.
Youth Stewardship Program:

Now Accepting Applications!
The Youth Stewardship Program (YSP) engages youth, 4th - 12th grade, in environmental education and service-learning projects in parks citywide. Our mission is to foster in youth an understanding of their important role in helping to build healthy social and natural communities. The program is free of cost and available to any youth group in San Francisco. YSP exposes urban students to an outdoor learning environment that proves to be engaging & challenging; mentally and physically. Students are taught science, environmental education, local natural & cultural history and fundamental life skills.
In an effort to provide long-term, consistent, and high-quality education and stewardship opportunities to as many youth as possible, YSP has teamed up to form the Stewardship & Environmental Education Collaborative of San Francisco (SEEC-SF). Members include the Green Schoolyard Alliance, Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ), California Academy of Sciences, Kids in Parks and the Presidio. The founding organizations are united by the following themes: environmental justice, restoration and stewardship, place-based learning & biodiversity. To learn more about SEEC-SF, please visit http://www.seecsf.org.
