Skatepark Concept Design for Potrero del Sol/La Raza Park
The Recreation & Park Department received more than 200 emails regarding the Grindline Concept Plan for Potrero del Sol/La Raza Park Skatepark that was posted on this website. The majority of voters liked the Grindline Concept Plan, but many made comments on how the design could be further improved. The Recreation & Park Department asked Grindline to revise the design to respond to two comments that were made repeatedly by voters independent of whether or not they liked the design. These two comments; modify the bowl so that it can be skated by more than one person at a time, and improve the street course by adding more obstacles and banks, changed the design in several significant ways. Here's what Grindline has to say about Concept Design 1... "The first concept features a unique bowl design which is a one a of a kind flow bowl, that will be unlike anything in Northern California. It is a combination of many different bowls, offering a little bit of everything in one fluid bowl. The bowl will be skated by one rider at a time. The user will be able to ride a variety of different transitions, grind pool coping, grind steel coping, carve a cradle and blast airs all in one run. The cradle feature that is included into the park will be the only one in an urban area in California. The size of the bowl makes the cradle possible; incorporating one of the most unique features in modern skatepark design without taking away from the other critical elements of a good bowl. The cradle allows a skater to whip around and get oververt with minimal effort offering many more speed options, direction changes and a weightless feeling that might be the closest thing to looping a fullpipe. The street area in the original concept offers a technical street course similar to what is often found in the real street." Here's what Grindline has to say about Concept Design 2... "The second concept incorporates two mirrored kidney bowls. The dueling kidneys allow two skaters to ride the bowl area at once. Because of the limited size of the two pools there is not a cradle or other cutting edge design features included in this bowl concept. The approach with this design was to use a classic bowl shape that is tried and tested by many a pool skater. The kidney shape is a timeless pool design that offers a lot in a compact pool shaped bowl. With the mirrored kidneys, skaters will be able to do tricks both ways; mastering one will not mean mastering both bowls. Riders will be able to do their tricks backside then take them to the other bowl and do it frontside. Skaters can go both ways; in the opposite bowl everything will be the other direction. The street area in the second concept is a more flowing street area with less technical elements but a whole lot more flow; allowing a skater to cruise around the entire street area in one run." A number of improvements are planned for Potrero del Sol/La Raza Park in addition to the skatepark. The improvements for Potrero del Sol/La Raza Park are a mixture of renovations to existing infrastructure, security measures and new program elements. New program elements are intended to bring new park users to the park. Renovation and security measures will allow existing users to better enjoy the park.
